Maria Bastaki, PhD
Maria Bastaki, PhD, joined Verto Solutions in 2012 as a Staff Scientist. She works with several of Verto’s clients and focuses on toxicology and risk assessment.
Dr. Bastaki earned a BSc in Pharmacy and a PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Patras, Greece. Her research focused on inhibitors of angiogenesis and tumor growth, including more than two years of graduate work on endothelial cell biology as a visiting student at the Gray Laboratory, Mount Vernon Hospital in NW London, England. She later worked as research scientist on mechanisms of epithelial cell polarity at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and in molecular epidemiology and genetic susceptibility to oxidative stressors and organophosphate pesticides at the University of California, Berkeley. From 2005-2011, Dr. Bastaki was a member of the faculty at the Evergreen State College, in Olympia, WA where she taught toxicology, risk assessment, cell biology, and biochemistry classes.
Prior to joining Verto Solutions, Dr. Bastaki worked as a consultant in providing risk assessments of chemical ingredients in consumer products and of water contaminants, and also in assessing the safety of medical devices.
